Scientific Name: Opheodrys aestivus Family: Colubridae Adult Size: 20 to 30 inches Range: Widely distributed from southern New Jersey to Kansas, over the entire southern U.S. to central Texas and also in northeastern Mexico. Habitat: The slender, whip-like body shape shows this species to be arboreal, both basking and hunting for prey in shrubs and trees. It prefers moist areas, but also is found along wooded pasture edges. Specimens are active both during the day and at night.
