The only crocodile native to the United States, few people have ever been fortunate enough to set eyes upon a wild specimen. The population inhabiting the fringes of Biscayne Bay and the Everglades is adept at keeping out of sight in mangrove lined waterways. The North American population was numbering possibly less than 100 individuals only a few decades ago. Recent findings have revealed that channelization projects by man have resulted in raised banks that have been utilized successfully as nest sites by American crocs. Their numbers are on the rise now, largely due to their rectification of what was a severely limiting factor of their reproductive biology.
