The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, a veterinary specialty accreditation board, has recognized the first-ever designation of Reptile and Amphibian Specialist for five veterinarians:
- Dr. Thomas Boyer, San Diego
- Dr. Rob Coke, San Antonio
- Dr. Charles Innis, Milford, Mass.
- Dr. Paul Raiti, Mt. Vernon, N.Y.
- Dr. Kevin Wright, Mesa, Ariz.
These veterinarians submitted credentials to a very rigorous screening process to be allowed to sit for the specialty examination. Not every veterinarian that applies to sit for the exam qualifies. After passing the credentialing, each applicant must take and pass an eight-hour examination on all aspects of reptile and amphibian medicine.
The new Reptile and Amphibian specialty designation has been years in the making. These five individuals are the only veterinarians in the United States that can legally call themselves Reptile and Amphibian Specialists. As Diplomates, they have each received the new title of DABVP (RA).
