Breeding the Angel Island Chuckwalla

Larger and more impressive than the common chuckwalla, captive-bred Sauromalus hispidus is gaining in popularity.

By Jerry D. Fife

The popularity of the Angel Island chuckwalla (Sauromalus hispidus) has greatly increased in recent years. Only captive-bred hatchlings are available, and this, along with increased demand, has kept prices high. As of this writing, hatchlings typically cost more than $100. Wild-caught common chuckwallas (S. ater) are often available for less; however, the Angel Island chuckwalla is a larger, more impressive lizard, and captive-bred hatchlings don’t have the health or acclimation issues that may plague wild-caught common chuckwallas.
