August 2008 Editor's Note

Shall we continue publishing this venomous issue?

By Russ Case

Welcome once again to our special biennial venomous issue.

This is our fourth time bringing you this special issue focusing exclusively on “hot” herps. This year you’ll find articles about taipans, boomslangs, rattlesnakes and other mesmerizing animals. And safety tips, of course.

Every time we publish the venomous issue I remind readers that we in no way mean to endorse venomous reptiles as appropriate pet candidates for every Tom, Dick and Harry Snakekeeper. Venomous snakes (and I’ll throw in Gila monsters and beaded lizards, too) should be kept only by the most advanced, responsible hobbyists.

Not everyone likes our venomous issue. Some people think it could influence beginners to keep dangerous animals — despite our regular warnings that these snakes should only be kept by veteran snakekeepers. Others think it’s a waste of an issue because the audience (those who keep hot snakes) is too limited. Some people are flat-out against the keeping of hot species because they think that doing so invites danger.

On the other hand, we also get positive feedback. The hot issue was created in response to reader demand for articles about venomous snakes. Some say that no matter what we publish, people are still going to keep these animals, so they should have access to advice from others with experience keeping them. Other readers say they would never keep venomous snakes, but they still enjoy reading about them.

I can see both sides, yet I am unsure which — those who like the venomous issue or those who don’t — represents the majority of REPTILES readers, a group I always try to please.

I have over thirty years experience working with venomous snakes but still welcome any information that is available..I agree with Jesse Black on catch boxes..there is never overkill when it come to safety and he gave me a good wake up call on utilizing catch boxes with my venomous snakes especially with elapids
I wouldn't of got that wake up call if it wasn't for this months venomous issue. keep up the good work. We should not let other people who don't have the experience and instill their fear of venomous
species dictate what kind of issues we should or shouldn't have. There are people who don't like snakes alltogether and have a fear of them and even wonder why we as herpers keep them and are trying to dictate to
us having them as pets but we don't let them dictate to us what kind of herps should be in "Reptiles" magazine, do we?Wellits come down to the same thing. This magazine should be for everyone..I could always use more information no matter how much experience I have.

This is like the Pit bull topic in the dog area. No matter what people will have poisonous snakes we can only hope they are responsible owners same as pitbulls. I love both but the difference is I would have a pitbull (if i didn't already have 4dogs ;) I wouldn't have a venomous snake because I have teenagers who don't listen to the "don't touch" rule. I think this issue is needed by people to learn more. Why stop that? Keep printing the venomous snake issues!!!! Love you guys!

I enjoy reading the Venomous issues. I do not own a hot but that doesn't mean I don't want to learn more about them. I would not continue to subscribe to the magazine if the Venomous issues were not included. The venomous snakes are some of the most beautiful and interesting, thanks for the articles.
