This Where in the World is REPTILES submission shows Jonathan Barone of Drexel Hill, Pa., visiting Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Africa.
Kids can submit artwork to win free prizes in REPTILES every month. Pictured is a water moccasin by Amanda Wright of Brandon, Fla.
As regular readers know, REPTILES holds a lot of monthly contests in order to give away free stuff. The first one you come to in the “Mailbag” section every month is “Where In The World Is REPTILES?” I love this section, in which people submit photos of themselves holding up REPTILES magazine in different locales. We really enjoy seeing all the interesting places people have taken REPTILES; so far this year we’ve seen the magazine show up in front of Machu Picchu in Peru; St. Martin in the Caribbean; the White House; Venice, Italy; the Sphinx and pyramids in Egypt; Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Africa and even underwater off the coast of Costa Rica (held up by one of our scuba-diving readers)! “Where in the World?” was the idea of REPTILES’ art director, Veronique Bos, and I remain very glad that Vero had it. And readers who submit photos benefit, too, not just by sharing their photos with thousands of REPTILES readers, but anybody who’s photo is published currently receives a $50 gift certificate from Zoo Med!
People can also enter our “Reader Reward” scavenger hunt-type contest, in which we present a quote from an article in each issue of REPTILES, and ask readers to find it in the magazine and tell us where it was. We always get a bunch of responses from people hoping to win any number of great monthly prizes provided by the sponsors. And although we discontinued the “Herpkidz” section in REPTILES a couple months ago, we still have the same opportunities for kids to win free prizes that “HerpKidz” offered. We still publish a photo of a “HerpKid” every month who is 15 years old or younger, and we also continue to publich children’s reptile artwork in “Herp Art.” Any kids who’s photos or artwork appears get free reptile products from those sections’ sponsors every month.
Sponsors for “Reader Reward,” “HerpKid” and “Herp Art” so far this year have included Exo Terra, Conceptual Creations Pet Products, Healthy Herp, Midwest Tongs, Tetrafauna, Flukers and Timberline. And they give away good stuff, too! (And let me say here, thanks to all the sponsors who are willing to participate.)
In addition to these regular monthly giveaways, we’ve held many other contests. We’ve had photo and art contests over the years, and the Tat Attack! tattoo contest, in which people submit photos of their herp-oriented tattoos, has proven to be very popular. It is held every other year, so the next one will be in 2012; check out entries from the 2008 and 2010 contests here and here.
So we’re always willing to hold a great contest, and were more than happy to team up with the sponsors of the latest one, The STAND UP FOR SNAKES Video Contest! Off and on for the past several months we’ve been talking with Brian Barczyk about holding a video contest of some sort. Brian and his crew, as you may know, produce the popular SnakebytesTV videos, so we were happy to team up with him, as well as the other sponsors – Freedom Breeder, Rodent Pro and Zoo Med – to hold a video contest. Because snakes are often being persecuted, especially in recent years due to all the various legislation that surfaces to curtail their keeping, I thought it would be fun to stage the contest as a big PR event for snakes, with people making videos that show why snakes can make great pets. It would give people a chance to make zany videos if they wanted, demonstrating their affection for snakes. Maybe others will choose to make a serious statement as to why it’s unnecessary to ban constrictors.

Make sure to enter the STAND UP FOR SNAKES video contest!
I know many people would be happy to make such videos anyway, but this is a contest after all, with some great sponsors, so to sweeten the pot, we’re going to have first-, second- and third-place winners, and each one will get a fantastic assortment of prizes. First off, Brian Barczyk is going to give three free ball pythons to each winner. In addition to the snakes, each person will also receive a free rack system in which to house them from Freedom Breeder, a year’s supply of feeder rodents for the snakes from Rodent Pro, and all the supplies the winners will need to care for the snakes, including bedding, bowls and more, and even a Reptibator (for with these three snakes, the winners may even choose to try breeding them), from Zoo Med. Last but certainly not least, each of the three winners will also get a free three-year subscription to REPTILES magazine!
If these prize packages, along with the opportunity to do right by snakes, doesn’t encourage people to participate, I don’t know what will. So put your thinking caps on and get those creative juices stirring. Go here to get the complete scoop, including all the rules and deadlines, about the Stand Up For Snakes video contest. I hope you’ll enter, too. Good luck, snake fans!
