Mystery Skull Challenge

» Mystery Skull Challenge
Do you know what herp skull this is? Each month ReptileChannel will display a herp skull along with a clue. It is up to you to guess what species it represents and email us your answer.

You may or may not know it, but occasionally forces gather to question (others would say “attack,” and they would not be wrong) the reptile-keeping hobby. Most recently the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued a Notice of Inquiry regarding boas, pythons and anacondas. It was a call for information that many enthusiasts believe is the first step to eventually outlawing these snakes (USFWS has said there are no plans toward this end). At nearly the same time, the U.S. Geological Survey announced, using some now infamous maps as illustration, that Burmese pythons could overrun several states in the U.S. No matter that the report is widely believed to be based on faulty science and misinterpretation; the mainstream media jumped on it and ridiculous headlines appeared warning that we’re all going to be plagued by rampaging pythons. In a similar vein, the California state senate recently proposed restrictions on additional herp species, including all species of the genus Ambystoma, which are the popular tiger salamanders.

As a member of the media myself, I’m always disillusioned by the news outlets that subscribe to the “keep the public scared” mentality of sensationalistic reporting. This is not to mention unreasonable legislation being put forth. You can help combat this by writing sensible, well-thought-out letters to the appropriate parties. Read about the scenarios mentioned here on ReptileChannel. If you are a reptile enthusiast who wants to continue keeping reptiles, it’s time to make your voice heard.
