Russian Tortoise Species Profile

The Russian tortoise is one of the most common tortoises in the pet trade today because it is currently heavily imported. Captive bred Russian tortoises are becoming more common as some of these imported groups become established. When the political situation with Russian was not as it is today the Russian tortoise was not often imported and as a result was not as common as it is today. Caution should be exercised when acquiring an imported Russian tortoise because they are usually stressed and heavily parasitized. A veterinarian visit is a must when a wild caught Russian tortoise is obtained.

Russian tortoises make great pets because they are relatively small and very active in captivity. They are very cold tolerant but do not do well in cold and damp environments. They will develop respiratory problems rather quickly if kept under cool and damp conditions for any extended length of time although they do handle cool dry conditions very well at which time they will be inclined to hibernate.

These tortoises are opportunistic feeders taking dark leafy greens and fibrous vegetables. Fruits such as pears and apples in addition to berries can be fed to add variety but should be fed sparingly. Russian tortoises will also take insects and carrion.

A water dish with clean fresh water should be provided at all times although they do not use it very often seeming to get their hydration from their food.

  It's cooling down...
That was what I heard. I was at work all day today so I didn't get to enjoy the great outdoor. If I worked 12 hours every single day, I might as well be a VAMPIRE, because I wouldn't see daylight!

I'm getting ready for SUMMER. I'm buying passes for Raging Waters and Disneyland to keep the kids busy. They will be in Summer school until mid July. We're still undecided as to where to go during the three weeks vacation in August. The last time we went for a cruise we had to have two rooms, since only 4 were allowed in one room. We had to take my mom in law with us. It was quite expensive. If that's the case then the cruise is off. I want to go for an all inclusive trip to Mexico, but my hubby hates flying. It seems like we'll most likely end up going where we always go for vacation...San Diego or San Francisco.

Anywho, I'll be off tomorrow and I'll be volunteering at my son's school. Then...my dreadful three day weekend at work! My son Jacob will be eight on Sunday, but we'll celebrate it next week along with my parents. It will also be a mother's day brunch since we both will be working mother's day weekend. Here's a vote and thanks for putting up with me :) GOOD NIGHT!

Ps. It doesn't matter how many votes you already have or how many votes you get...as long as you have the most number of votes in one month period. For example, if no one else gets a vote and you get one vote the entire month, you'll be ROTM the following month.

Come visit me, SPONGELINA BALLERINA~Brrrr. ..it's gettin' chilly!!.

  RUSSIAN TORTOISE CARE
The Russian Tortoise Care Sheet
(click here for a printer friendly version)

This is a small species. Adult females are 8-10". Males 6-8". With proper care they should out live their owners. There is allot of conflicting information about the Russian Tortoise. I feel that this is due in part to the fact that they are very adaptable. This allows them to survive in many conditions. However the goal is to provide them with optimal environments. This is somewhat limited in captivity. The following should help.

Check Ups:

When you get your tortoise, it is highly recommended that you take your pet for a check up. Most Russians are wild caught. And while yours may appear to be healthy (click here to learn how to select a "healthy" tortoise) the stress of being brought home and placed in strange surrounding may cause a hidden problem to surface. This is true even with long term wild caught and captive born animals. Make sure the Vet measures and weighs your tort. Also request a fecal to check for parasites. To see what may be hidden in your tortoise click here.

Diet:

Russian Tortoises are grazers and enjoy broad leaf plants. The best diet is a variety of weeds (leaves and flowers). Dandelion is a favorite. For detailed diet information:http://www.russiantortoise. org/russiantortoisediet.htm for a list of edible plants: http://www.russiantortoise.org/edible_plants.htm and http://www.russiantortoise.org/plant_photos.htm

Water:

Unfortunately, many believe that tortoises naturally acquire almost all of their fluid requirements from its food and that therefore they do not require additional drinking water. Russians tortoises are indeed adapted to a semi-arid environment and its system of eliminating waste via uric acid rather than via urea is clear evidence of this. Uric acid can be eliminated using substantial lower levels of water wastage than can systems based on urea, such as those of mammals. Therefore, tortoises, such as Russians, eliminate nitrogenous waste products with far greater water conservation. Its behavior is also programmed to reflect this need not to waste precious water. The semi-solid, white deposits are expelled urates. Tortoises are programmed not to use water in the bladder and to eliminate urates only if replenishment is available. Depriving the tortoise of water will result in urates being accumulated and quite often to dangerous levels. During a rain tortoises will often drink and urinate simultaneously. This behavior can be stimulated in hot weather by lightly spraying the tortoise with a garden hose.

In the wild, during hot and rain-free summers, aestivation or semi-aestivation occurs. There are several factors that will lead to aestivation. Lack of food and environmental water are major factors, as is temperature. During aestivation periods tortoises maintain themselves below ground, in burrows which provide a stable microclimate. In these burrows temperatures are much lower than those above gro
